It honestly does not make sense to say that a star tattoo is unoriginal or overly done. Yes a lot of people have star tattoos but there's also a lot of people out there w/ tattoos of skulls, flowers, birds, hearts, lovers names, birth signs, and so on and you don't see them getting bashed. I think bashing star tattoos is a "fad" at the moment until sometime finds a new tattoo design to pick on. Who's to say that a star doesn't mean something to the person, yes people get it just to get but so what?! There's lots of people who do get a tattoo because it means something and others do it just to say hey look I have a tattoo. It's there choice so why would a design on somebody Else's body bother you so much? People need to quit being so judgmental of other people's art because you don't know why they got it and overall it's nobodies business but there own.

I love angel and angel wing back pieces! I wish more people would ask me to do them.
But choose your artist carefully and remember it's a lot to sit down for in one go.
I did a folded wings on a girl, and she got married in a silver backless dress. She asked me to detail the wings with silver stage make up and rhinestones on her wedding day. I think she looked amazing. So I disagree with the trashy answer.

Everyone has their own opinion of how much a tattoo hurts. I had people telling me that getting a tattoo on my foot and wrist would "kill", and it didn't bother me at all. However, I've seen some girls cry the ENTIRE time they were getting tattooed. Just take some ibuprofen an hour before you go in and take a friend to talk to to keep your mind off the pain.

I would pick something feminine, because you will have this tattoo when you are an old woman :). I like your idea best, but could also see two small butterflies or birds, but leaning towards butterflies. They have been set free to fly up to heaven. Whatever you do, don't put it on the middle or lower back near your spine, or you may not be able to get an epideral if you ever have a baby. Something a lot of young girls do not know about, and hate to have you find out after tattoo already done.

list of tattoo idea and their meanings. pretty much all but one aren't in stone. ive been thinking for years. and ill be training in becoming a tattoo artist relatively soon.

1: a black undead koi fish a little above my heart. i want it to be crying blood and have the red kanji for love on its forhead, and off to the side (not on the fish) the kanji for perserverance.

the meaning for this comes from my father, he was adopted and his adoptive mother beat the shit out of him and stuffed religion down his throat. then thought "repenting" fixed their relationship. shes a very cruel woman. the koi fish being undead does represent my dad. koi are very durable. the bleeding eyes represent religion and the kanjis are for perservearing past it. and the love on its forhead meaning nobody really saw what was going on with her, but saw a "loving mother" i really love japanese culture too, it fits well.
im really solid on this one.

second is a lady ranicorn, on adventure time, wrapped arounnd my forearm...just at the wrist and ending on top of my hand eating a cupcake.
in the show nobody understands lady ranicorn because she speaks korean, and nobody really understands the amount of work she does, coloring the world. it really just represents me persuing my art career.

third is a realistic banana with wings below my belly button lol
basically because my full name is Ariana, my dad calls me banana or "flying banana" not what it sounds like. lol.

next is a tramp stamp of a cupcake.

You cannot translate Western letters into Kanji. It doesn't work like that. You should stay away from Kanji all together, it's almost always incorrect. Please take a look at this website if you don't believe me: http://www.hanzismatter.com - read right down and watch the white people get mocked for having symbols on their skin that they have no idea of the meaning of. My personal favourite on there currently is the girl who unwittingly got 'cheap whore' tattooed on herself.

As for star tattoos, just google it. I promise you there are billions of images out there.

There are even funnier ones if you look on the old blog pages, but I forget most of them, I think there are a few who it turned out had extracts from chinese takeout menus tattooed on them, one was 'prostitute' and there were a couple of things like 'big mistake' LOL. I'm 18 and I really want to get a hamsa (hand of god) tattoo design on the side of my ribcage, but I want it to be relatively small (smaller than the majority of the hamsa rib tattoos i've seen). However geting a rib tattoo for your first one isnt recomended. I have a 6-7 hour rib tattoo on my entire left side of my body. I also had around 15 hours of ink done previous to that including some on my chest. About an hour into my rib tattoo was more painful than all of my other ink put together. Also the rib area is a good place to put a big tattoo. You have plenty of good spots to put small tattoos.

I say don't get one at all...the ink in tattoos tend to bleed a lot easier and a lot faster on fingers than anywhere else. So whatever cute little design you get now will more than likely end up looking like a blob of ink a few years from now, or looking like you've been wearing fake jewelry. I have seen a lot of them both in person and online. I have seen some really bad portraits of people's ugly kids, wives etc. I saw a guy with a skull that looked drawn by a 2 year old. I saw a girl with a huge rotten egg on her calf. I have also seen some really bad cartoon characters that didn't look like they were done right. Things also get spelled wrong...this is more common than people think. I had a friend who got a picture of a trailer and the words "trailer park trash" tattooed. It was a funny tattoo but I personally would not get something like that.

One of the worst I ever heard of was a guy who went to some country where the tribes did tattoos. He wanted a warrior tattoo badly but didn't want to go through the (painful) men's right of passage to earn it. So they gave him a tattoo on his stomach...but it was the kind they gave to old women to symbolize the end of their child bearing years! Probably not what he wanted!

Another guy I heard about went to some Asian country and decided to get a tattoo. Supposedly the guy was a douche bag and said something to offend the tattoo artist. He said he wanted some word or phrase having to do with strength and he wanted it done in Asian writing. He had no idea what the writing meant but thought it looked cool and went home. When he found someone who spoke that language, the tattoo basically said, "Obnoxious and rude person" or something similar.

I never met these people and I am not sure if the stories are true or if they are just tattoo urban legends. Some wise suggestions for anyone wanting a tattoo:

1) Go to a reputable artist.
2) Take time to think about the design, your future and what you want to do in life.
3) NEVER get a tattoo in another language unless you speak that language and you are 100% sure of what it means.
4) If you have any doubt, WAIT! A tattoo is a big decision. Take as much time as you need.
5) Never do tattoos for someone else. Do it for you!

Being that you are girl in my opinion its not only where you put it but how you shape it to your body. Also, you may need to worry about it not being seen by employers. Generally, rib cage, lower back to the side, mid-back could be difficult to be seen unless in bathing suit. Then it could be tasteful on you upper back or ankle. Usually putting it in the middle of lower back, upper leg, lower stomach, etc could be considered trashy. Also take into consideration the natural curves your body has. Some tattoos even look better when you match them to the natural beauty your body already has. My personal favorite it the upper rib cage with its intense curves. I would just do a lot of research, get a good design, and find a good artist then it really doesn't matter..good luck!

Will you be a girly girl in about 5-10 years? That is one question you need to think about. I cover up a lot of tattoos like that. And can you handle pain a lot? Rib tattoos hurt like heck! I have a rib tattoo and I admit, I cried a little. It is the most painful tattoo I've ever had. Try going to your tattoo artist and asking them to combine shooting stars and tropical flowers into a design going up/down your ribs. We are good at stuff like that. But, only if you know you won't regret this and you know you can handle the pain!

My first tattoo was on my wrist, so there was no hiding it. I got home that night, and my mother freaked out on me. Phoned my dad (they're divorced) and he freaked out on me even more. The next few days were tense, but they lightened up eventually. They told me I'll never get a decent job, or man and I'll always be and look like a loser. So I just decided to prove them wrong. I'm less than 2 years away from graduating with my law degree, work for the Police AND I'm engaged to the most amazing man ever. My tattoo collection have grown since then, my mom now actually wants to see it and tells everyone about it, my dad says I look like a girl on TV (some show he watches, but it's a compliment so I'm happy.) They 'll get over it. Tell them, let them be mad, and just prove them (and the rest of society) wrong by being awesome. :D good luck.

I have a small lower back tattoo. It was my first, (of 10) and to this day it hold special meaning in my heart! I see many butterflies and other kind of unoriginal tattoo's there and that personally looks bad. My tattoo is my name the way my dad wrote in on my first Birthday card. He always had my back and loved me so I got it on my lower back. Its personally up to you though... I don't think they look trashy as long as it is small and respectful!

(my two sisters would get matching tattoos but with "faith" and the other with "love". I have seen these done before and that doesn't change my mind but I was wondering how annoyed tattoo artists would be if I presented them with these ideas. Only answer of you are a tattoo artist or are in the shop often, please! And try to be honest but nice!

Actually they do mind. I know a tattoo artist that had a girl come in and told him she wanted a star tattoo. He said he looked at her and just said "no, you don't" . . .

Trust me, they get tired of tattooing overused cliche tattoos . . .
