My sister asked me to get a tattoo with her, and I immediately jumped at the idea. She has been battling a serious eating disorder all of her life, and i wanted to show her that i support her in everything she does. I have a few ideas, but i would like some other ideas on what is a good symbol for support. Thanks guys!

Please don't get a Chinese symbol- that's just asking for trouble. One tiny mark out-of-place can change the entire meaning of the tattoo. Of course, if you actually are Chinese, or there is something significant about the culture/language that's a different story.

I've heard people associate butterflies with recovery from eating disorders- especially purple ones (lavender is the "awareness ribbon" color for eating disorders). Some people also get the National Eating Disorder Awareness logo. I also saw an episode of LA Ink where a girl got a tattoo symbolizing her recovery from an eating disorder (I'll add links below). Personally, I think that's something I would fit into a more personalized design.

I am designing a tattoo for myself to symbolize my struggle and recovery from depression. Over the past 8 to 12 years or so, I've struggled with bullying, verbal and emotional abuse/harassment (from peers and family), mild to severe depression, suicidal thoughts, and cutting. I've also had a lot of body image issues, and I've been painfully aware of how easy it would be for me to fall into the trap of an eating disorder (my problem is overeating, although there have been days when I hardly eat anything because I feel I'm too "fat").

For my tattoo, I'm looking at getting a feather pen because I have a life-long love of writing. The feather itself will be a multicolored peacock feather because the peacock represents beauty, resilience (peacocks can survive eating some types of poison), rebirth (like a phoenix), and being open. In the design, I'm going to include the awareness ribbon colors for eating disorders, self-injury, depression, mental health, suicide, bullying, and child abuse (as well as a couple other colors that I just like). I'm also adding my favorite scripture reference (Jeremiah 29:11-14), and I'm trying to figure out a good way to fit in a heart, cross, and sun to represent a quote that means a lot to me:

"I believe in the sun, even when it's not shining
I believe in love, even when I don't feel it.
And I believe in God, even when He is silent."

Maybe you can do something like that? I heard of someone wanting to get a tattoo of a bird flying out of a cage- which reminds me of the first stanza of an Emily Dickinson poem:

"Hope is the thing with feathers
that perches in the soul
and sings the tune-- without the words
and never stops at all."

It might be cool to do a bird flying out of an open cage or something as a design- with a lavender ribbon tied around the bird's neck or foot (so it's trailing behind), and add that poem in the design. I'm not sure how big you want to go for a design- this one might be a little much. There are also basic word tattoos you could do: strength, love, and live are a bit overdone (in my opinion). I've thought about getting "Captivating" tattooed to myself because it stems from a dream I have for myself- to be someone who is beautiful- and captivating- inside and out.

I'd pick something you and your sister have in common and tie it into something that you both feel is symbolic of her recovery. At the very least, adding in a lavender color will help (or you can tie in the NEDA logo). Just make it more personalized than just a logo, color, or some Chinese symbol.

Fitting in a broken mirror with a butterfly or bird would also be a cool idea.

Where should I get my tattoo?

I'm getting a Phoenix tat either on my wrist or ankle. Which looks better and which hurts worse? Got any phoenix designs that look cool? Pics?

The ankle is a better placement for it, and the ankle is also far more uncomfortable of a place to get it. The closer to the bone at the bottom of the ankle it is, the more discomfort you're going to have. I would recommend the calf for that piece, your artist will have more room to work with, to make it look really good, and an inch up from the ankle bone, it's far less painful. The Phoenix looks good, rising from the ashes into flight, and you'll have the room there for him to spread his wings a bit. Ask your artist, if it's very painful for you, if he could power down a bit, as long as you're still taking ink. Pour on the charm, because such a request might piss him off a little if you don't. We're suckers for girls in distress anyway, so be nice about it. Flirt shamelessly if need be, you can give him the number to Wendy's when he asks for it. But he'll do a great job on your tattoo, and probably hurt you a lot less. =)

Why does it seem like all of the good looking girls in college do drugs or alcohol?

No, I'm not making a blanket statement, but I'm noticing a pattern.

Good looking girls in high school tend to:

-have tattoos
-dress promiscuously
-drink alcohol regularly
-uses drugs

As an ugly guy myself, I'm not in the same "league", so it is of no concern to me anyway. But it's still disturbing to see what they subject themselves to.

Why do good looking girls do this to themselves? Yes I know there are exceptions, but I'm starting to become convinced that exceptions are rare.

I think I'm okay looking and I don't do drugs, drink alcohol, dress promiscously....id like a tattoo though......I think it's because of the media's influence nowadays selling those things as beautiful. its what all the "beautiful girls" do. if you do it too, you'll become societies idea of attractive. The same thing for old cigarette commercials. If you smoke, you're refined and elegant. If you watch alcohol commercials or look at tumblr or other advertising for that kind of scene, it makes it almost look as if alcohol, drugs, and promiscuity is attractive. So people buy into it.

They are a girl's face, usually facing sideways, and the girl has stitches on the side of her mouth like from a chelsea smile, and they usually have roses or a banner underneath.

The best place for a female to put a small symbol tattoo?

I want to get a tattoo of a religious symbol but I'm not sure where. For some reason I don't really like when girls have symbols on their shoulder blades. I think only words look like nice there. Where is another good place to get it that can be easily hidden but visible when wanted?

Top of your foot or back of your neck I would say. I have one on my foot and obviously that is really easy to hide with a shoe if you don't want to show it off. I made sure mine was positioned on my foot to show fully with a flip flop on so I can show it off lol. I'm thinking about getting a neck tattoo next and that can be hidden with hair as long as it's not too short. I was also thinking about a wrist, but that one seems a little harder to hide unless you wear a watch all the time...but then what was the point of getting it if you never see it lol.

I am a girl, 16, getting a tattoo with my mom for my 17th birthday. I'm getting a cross with the verse "Live by faith , not by sight" and I can't decide weather to get it on my back shoulder blade or the back of my neck. Which is more painful? Back of your shoulder or below your neck between the two shoulders. Im a 16 yo girl and I wanted to get a lotus flower on the back of my neck but its such a small space so I had to get It lower. If you want a verse it probably won't fit and if you get it at the base of your neck it will look weird, plus hurt alot cause of the bone there. I got mine just below it and I love it, it didnt hurt bad at all. I took 2 Tylenol before ( do not take Advil cause you'll bleed more ) so maybe that's why but it was totally bearable. I give it a 1/2 out of 10. I didn't clench or make any noise. My mom has one on her back shoulder she said hers didn't hurt to much either. But the one where I got can be hidden with my hair as well as shirts, hers can't. Its really faded because of the sun and she can't out her hair over it. Draw the sketch out and move it around Nd see what you like better. Your tatt artist will tell you if you can / can't do something and explain it & compromise with you. Just make sure you tell him to move the stencil if you don't like where he placed it

nah, it won't stretch, only if you gain like 100 pounds, then any tattoo would stretch lol

i have tattoos all over my lower stomach and hips and im 6 months preggo, nothing really has happened to them. they would only get ruined by stretch marks and the coco butter i put on myself everyday has avoided those altogether

can i give you some personal advice though? think twice about getting a tramp stamp and get it somewhere else. just bc you are a girl don't be afraid to show off your tattoos in a bold place!!

Gemma is my bohemian child. She was always doing things her own way. She refused to get a car, chose to bike everywhere. Got a decently paying job at a library, nothing too fancy, but enough for her to pay for her downtown flat. She knows Raelle's boyfriend Aedan the whole time she grew up, he was about 6 years older than her. She'd always had a crush, but he was off limits. When Raelle broke up with him, she was struck by how much she missed just seeing him, having conversations with him. A few years later, she went into a new coffee house, downtown. Surprisingly enough, Aedan owned it. They talked for hours that day. Two weeks later they were married. Ellie was so happy for her baby sister. A month later, she finds out she's pregnant if it's a girl, they want to name her Finley and a boy, Evan. When she goes in for an appointment, she finds out, she's going to have to use both names! And come up with two more! O_O Her life has changed drastically in only a few months. She is so happy, though. They move into the house his grandparents left him, it's a beautiful historic Victorian. what to get: well first off i'd stear clear from getting any names permanant on ur body.. but if ur just DEAD SET on getting something about ur bf on u then maybe go for a symbol or animal or something along those lines.
EX) my cuz wantd something of her bf on her and we talkd her out of doing a name (thank goodness) and she went with a bear claw and used the middle of the claw as a CD...because his nickname since childhood is bear and hes a dj. and they broke up!! (not saying that is going to happn 2u) and now she atleast has a beutiful design on her body rather than a name she'd be ashamed of!!!

So, a little about me...
I'm sixteen, have a daughter named Serenity. I'm kinda peachish paleish, really short, long brown hair with blonde highlights, braces, glasses, hazel eyes. I like being pretty but also got my tomboy days>:) I like to get dirty, wrestle/play-fight, video games, English class:), making new friends, hanging out with guys, drawing, singing, animals, babies, and listening to music. I live in Ohio, but am from Texas. I don't listen to a certain kind of music, I listen to everything. From Machine Gun Kelly, to Linkin park, Nicki Minaj, Nickelback, Brad Paisley, etc. I listen to everything.. ! And I am outgoing and loud and beautiful. I have tons of friends and a good life. I've had a hard life too though.

Based on all of that, what do you think the BEST tattoo would be for me and where at ?
Ideally, I want a tattoo on my hand, wrist, behind my ear, on my shoulder, lower back ( tramp stamp ? it's called I think ), ankle, or up the side of my belly. Or on my foot. So what should I get!!!???
Also, how much does it hurt in each of the places I mentioned? And how much does a small tattoo cost? And how long does it take ?

This website isn't the best place for advice on this. A tattoo should be only about/for you, not what the internet and a bunch of strangers say is best. Personally, I think getting a tattoo at sixteen is a bad idea. I've met a lot of people who regret getting one just because they want one around that age.

If you are seriously thinking about it, do some research. Look into tattoo books and blogs. Doodle your heart out and find symbols and images that appeal to you. Once you've found something you think you like, draw it up or have an artistic friend draw it up for you. Then, put it on your bathroom mirror for at least a month. If you still like it after seeing it every day for an extended period of time, then maybe think about going for it. You can place that drawing on yourself and shift it around until you find a place it fits.

Trying to convince my dad to let me get a tattoo?

I have this tattoo that I've wanted for a really long time. It has a lot of meaning to me and I know I won't regret it when I get older and it will be in a place nearly no one will see (my ribs). I'm turning eighteen in a few months and want to get the tattoo, and I can legally do it then without my parents permission.
In January, my grandmother passed away. The tattoo I want is from a card she gave me, and she wrote "The best is yet to come" inside of it. I want the tattoo in my grandmothers handwriting on my ribs. Not only does it mean something because it's from my grandmother, but also because it's inspiring and reminds me that there is much better things coming, and I think it will help me, especially because I also deal with depression and have these times when I feel like there is nothing to look forward to in the future.
My dad says I can't get the tattoo (even when I'm an adult and not living with them). He says he doesn't like tattoos on girls and that I will regret it. I keep telling him that it's not going to matter to anyone but me because very few people would see it (even if I'm in a bathing suit, no one would see it in the area where I want it, because I don't wear bikinis). He just keeps saying that he will know about it and he doesn't approve of tattoos. He's even got two of them himself, which to me don't even really have a meaning (one is the symbol for a football team).
I'm really trying to convince him to let me get one because I've wanted it for a while now and I don't see why I can't get it when I legally can because someone doesn't like it. I don't want to get it without him knowing, and even if I did he would probably find out because he knows a lot of guys that do tattoos. Any ideas on how to convince him? Thanks

I don't understand people that cover their tattoos for special occasions. I mean, your tattoo is a part of you every single day of your life, why not show it off on special occasions too?
To me, it just seems ridiculous.

I'm getting married this fall, and my dress will be showing at least 3 of my tattoos (I may get more before the big day)

The other posters who think it's fine, with as much respect as I can muster, have not the first idea about acting as a career. They are from the stable that says, "follow your dreams, you can do anything you want to in life". Well, that isn't true. Icarus never did get to fly, and I still haven't won the lottery.

Make up will not cover a tattoo. These days, because of HD, and more sensitive digital filming (a film screen shows people up to a 100 times larger than normal in extreme close-up - and that includes shots of hands passing letters or pointing, or doing whatever hands are directed to do; even widescreen TVs show actors and their hands many times larger than real life). Because of that, make up is not what it used to be, it's far, far more subtle. The idea that you use pancake make ups even in theatre these days is unheard of, unless you're deliberately made up to look somehow alien, for instance as an animal in The Lion King.

Immediately you must realise that a finger tattoo means you can never play certain characters - you could not do a period drama for example, and loads of other work too. Now, you may be sitting there thinking "I don't want to do that rubbish anyway" which is fine, until you want an agent to represent you. An agent doesn't earn unless you do. Why is he going to risk his business representing a girl who is not flexible in what she plays? You're supposed to be an actor, you're supposed to become a completely different character in every role. That's the whole point of acting. An agent is going to find you dead weight. And without an agent, you'll never work.

A tattoo is for life. Acting ambitions and indeed a career, may not last very long. But if you want to give it a serious go, don't make life impossibly hard for yourself. Get a tattoo when you're older and your career as an actor is either over or so stratospheric that you can pick and choose your roles.

Back...you have a lot of room there to tatoo. If you're fit, consider something on the side of the body, too....IMHO, that's the hot spot for guys(it's the equivalent of lower back for girls!)

Ok so this is a very long story... but i really need some advice as idk what else to do.

My bf and I have been dating for over 4 1/2 years already. We have always been very happy and our relationship has been great. We first started having a some problems when he got a new job and his supervisor was a tattooed girl with piercings and crazy hair. She was not attractive but had that "suicide girl look". He never expressed any feelings for her and thought she was ugly. months went on and slowly i noticed they were becoming work buddys. He started being more secretive about her and she would flirt with him right in front of him. i told him i did not like her and to stop talking to her and keep it professional. He didn't like that idea and claimed she was just his "friend". so this went on for a while and finally one day he told me that he was sort of "attracted to her & liked her style". that really hurt my feelings because i was right all along. anyways, we somehow made it after all that. However, i have never forgotten about it and still resent it.

a couple of days ago, i was on his laptop and while typing a URL, her tumblr popped up. This infuriated me. Why was he looking at her tumblr? it had been over a year! he didn't see when i saw the tumblr so i confronted him saying that i saw a girls blog. he panicked so much and lied for his life. presented me with a suicide girl's tumblr. I was crushed because he had just lied to me about her again. told me he was just "curious". may i add this was all on my birthday?! anyways i forgave him again like i always do.

then we go back to tumblr.... he has a tumblr dedicated to "tattooed girls". i've known about it but never asked to see it and gave him privacy. so after my bday incident when he showed me the suicide girls tumblr, i wanted to see it. i did and he only followed about 9 people, and liked about 40ish photos (all tattood women). then i see the women he had previously showed met that he thought was really hot and guess what? she looks just like her supervisor.... i was very upset at that. I've had just about enough giving him so many chances and trying to "understand"guys needs. so i thought i deserved to express myself, i told him he could keep looking at those girl on tumblr but not the one that looked like his supervisor. he said he never made the connection between the two but idk if that true because he will lie for his life to not make me upset. he promised me he would not look at her because he didn't want to loose me. Wrong, he still looks at her although i said i didn't want him to.

my thing is, i am aware that he watches adult movies online, has a tumblr with naked tattooed women and i have said that is ok as long as its during his private time and doesn't make it personal (he had looked some up on instagram and had several wallpapers on his comp). and yet he cannot understand and leave ONE girl alone although it makes me very upset because it looks like her supervisor?!?!?!

and now he tells me that he now goes on his tumblr more often then ever. that me being "jelous" and telling him not to look at that one suicide girl makes him want to even more. so lately he has been going on his tumblr everyday and liking many photos. i am just so confused and don't know what to do. he says he thinks girls with tattoos look hot but would never ever date one and that he doesn't really care if they are the most attractive girls as long as they have tattoos which is he found his supervisor "attractive". However this worries me because now every time i see a girl with tattoos i feel like his is drooling over her.

he always tells me he loves me and the way i look.

About me: I would consider myself an attractive girl and very sweet. I don't want to sound conceded but many guys express that they think I'm beautiful, hot, cute etc. Ironically I've always liked tattoos and piercing and think some girls do look attractive. I have 3 body piercings, gauges, and several ear piercings. I also have future appointments for tattoos to get done on me.

Please help. Anything. I know its a lot of info but any advice will help.

Look, you've told him how you feel about him ogling those pictures and you've asked him countless times to stop. He still does it. What does that tell you?
He doesn't respect you or your feelings.
Having certain preferences is fine, and he may well genuinely love you.
But when your fantasies start spilling over and causing problems in your personal life, that's when it stops being a preference and starts becoming an obssession.
Deep down, are you planning these tattoo appointments because YOU want them? Or are you doing it because you're trying to "keep" him?
If it's for you, then fine. But if even a small part of you thinks that he'll be more "attracted" to you, or will treat you better if you are tattooed as well, then I would urge you not to do it.
It's fair enough liking tattoes, but when you're with someone, you're not with them for their body art. You're with them for the person they are... And you accept them as they are.
If he doesn't respect you, honour you, and treat you right NOW, then he is never going to... Tattoed or not!
I think you need you either accept that this is the way he will always be and stop expecting him to change, or walk away and find someone you trust, who makes you feel secure and loved.

This may seem cliche, but it is cliche for a reason. :} You can never go wrong with the infinity symbol. You could do it with small letters and have the letters be his and your names. You could also do an anchor to your heart. His name on the anchor. It doesn't have to be complicated. Think of something that could mean a lot to both of you. Rings, balloons- anything that expresses what you think of him.

I saw a cute post on tumblr of a guy with a rocket on his hand and a girl with a planet on hers. Anytime they would hold hands it would look like the rocket was going to the planet. It can be fun. :}

I would pick something feminine, because you will have this tattoo when you are an old woman :). I like your idea best, but could also see two small butterflies or birds, but leaning towards butterflies. They have been set free to fly up to heaven. Whatever you do, don't put it on the middle or lower back near your spine, or you may not be able to get an epideral if you ever have a baby. Something a lot of young girls do not know about, and hate to have you find out after tattoo already done.

I am wanting to get a cover up tattoo and have to decide on what I want to get. I am thinking of getting a half sleeve Hawaiian theme tattoo. I have a hula girl tattoo on my back and thought that they would go well together (sticking with one theme on my body). The half sleeve tattoo would consist of a mix of flowers, palm trees, tiki, fish, etc.

I lived in the Hawaiian islands (Maui) and am in love with the state. I will eventually be moving to Honolulu soon and living there. The tattoo would mean something to me I can keep with forever. Opinions appreciated!

How should I tell if the tattoo shop and artist is good enough?

I would like to get a tattoo for my birthday. It will be my first one. Is there anything I should look out for as far as a decent shop? Very simple. Any reputable tattoo shops will have their artists portfolios out so that you can look at them. If they don't then they are probably not professional and you should avoid them. Also, look for cleanliness. A good shop is a clean shop. Also a good shop will not have you pay until the tattoo is finished. They will make sure that you have enough money, but not ask you to pay until the work is done. A good artist will always open the needles in front of you, assemble the tattoo gun in front of you, and wear gloves at all times!!. A good artist also is not afraid to tell you that a flash design looks better on paper than it does on skin. A good artist is also not afraid to talk you out of getting a design that you may regret later or be unsure about getting in the first place. The biggest thing to remember is that you pay for what you get. That goes for everything in life, tattoos are no different. So shop around and look at prices. If the price seems too cheap to believe, then you should probably not believe in the quality of it. REMEMBER, TATTOOS ARE FOREVER! As far as ideas and locations go, that's up to you and the artist. A tattoo should mean something, not be just a trendy thing, or something that a million other people have. The best advice I can give you in that area is get something kinda small (not a whole back piece or something large like that) for your first tattoo. Make sure you are able to handle the pain. Also maybe get it somewhere that it can be hidden in case you don't ever plan on getting any more. If you like getting tattoos as much as I did then you wont mind people seeing other ones you may get in the future. I made the concious decision to get my arms sleeved down. I thought about future jobs I might get and having to wear long sleeve shits forever.
