How do young Japanese (in Tokyo) feel about tattoos?

willnyu198

I have the back of both of my legs covered. One tattoo is a Japanese design, a koi fish turning into a dragon, which is big and the other is Atlas, holding a globe. I'm a 24 year old white guy from California, so I'm obviously not a Yakuza, but still understand the taboo in Japan. What is the general opinion of the Japan's younger generation (25 and under) towards tattoos? I know overall they are still looked upon negatively, but it seems like younger people are more open and accepting. I want to live there eventually, but don't know if it will cause me problems. Since they are in an area that's easy to cover, I don't think it will be a huge issue, but I'm still concerned. I'm a corporate, business type, so I always dress nice, am very courteous and don't look like trouble. I know there are tattoo shops in Japan, so there must be a certain level of acceptance.

When Japanese Univ students, particularly girls, reached 21-23 years old (the age they graduate), they go to plastic surgery to erase their tattoo to get better job.

And small tattoo stickers are also popular in Japan.

These are the reason why the absolute amount of tattooed people don't increase in Japan.

Go to establishment with your friend. I think you have no big trouble, maybe some.
But remember, when you were in Japan, the country is NOT the West. You can't judge with your American's standard.
And you should know that they don't look negatively, but they do NOT want see tattoo (do you understand this feeling?). Whether you are Yakuza or not doesn't matter.
Japanese people focus on how other people think and want in public place, rather than focusing on personal (individual) feeling. They are afraid of being a person "lack in common sense".

All the reports in English are written by westerners. Their feeling differ from Orientals. When you came to Japan, ask Japanese directly, not only younger but also elder people. They may not tell you honest feeling though.

Answer
Don't worry, it is a classic in the Japanese tattoo tradition. Any Japanese tattoo style artist can do it. The only problem is there aren't any in Wisconsin. If you can travel, email me and I will recommend one.
